Jianchang Li was born in Qiandeng, China near the end of World War II. 

His early education in Chinese painting under his father's guidance laid a strong foundation, although his father's premature passing when Jianchang was only 9 marked a significant turning point in his artistic development. Despite facing adversity, he persevered in his pursuit of Chinese painting and calligraphy, eventually honing his skills at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou learning from many of the great masters in his region of China. Soon after graduating, the cultural revolution started in China which greatly limited the opportunity for traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy.   Determined to have a career in the arts, Jianchang dedicated himself to the performing arts, particularly in stage and television productions in China. In his later years, he revisited his roots, focusing on Chinese classical paintings and calligraphy, garnering recognition and numerous awards for his contributions to traditional Chinese arts.

 

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Jianchang remains committed to passing on the legacy of traditional Chinese art to younger generations. He generously devotes his free time to conducting demonstrations for local schoolchildren, aiming to instill an appreciation for the cultural heritage he holds dear.

 

Moreover, inspired by the memory of his late brother, who perished in the Rape of Nanking at the age of 4, Jianchang actively advocates for compassion, understanding, and unity among all individuals. His advocacy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of combating dehumanization and fostering a sense of common humanity across communities.
